You may not be aware of what chip seal paving is, but you have probably seen the results of it, especially if you have driven around on any of the back roads or side roads in the Austin, TX area. Chip sealing can have many different looks, because the top layer of chip seal paving can be made of several different types of stone, for instance river rock, slate, or granite.
The process involves applying a base layer of hot, liquid asphalt over an already prepared surface, so that a layer of stone can be added and rolled into the liquid asphalt surface. Then the tar & rock surface is left to cure for a couple days, after which the loose gravel will be swept away, and the chip seal surface is considered complete.
